BPI branches receive a green building certification from the IFC

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) announced that it has set a new milestone in the country’s sustainable banking as BPI Iloilo Solis and BPI Loyola Katipunan became the first two bank branches to achieve the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) – Have received certification from World Member of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) banking group.

EDGE is a green building certification with quantitative metrics that offers cost-effective strategies to reduce energy use, water use and the energy contained in materials. BPI has three more offices in the pipeline for EDGE certification.

“Next year we plan to rebuild 25 stores to also get EDGE certification. This is part of our vision to be at the forefront of sustainable business practices in the Philippine banking industry and to build a better Philippines—one family, one community at a time,” said Maria Cristina L. Go, Head of Consumer Banking at BPI.

The certification of BPI Iloilo Solis and BPI Loyola Katipunan offices was issued by the Philippine Green Building Initiative, Inc. (PGBI), an IFC-accredited certification body.

In a recent joint letter, Leandro A. Conti, President and Chair of PGBI, and Ramon D. Aguilos, Program Director of PGBI EDGE, congratulated BPI on this accomplishment, stating, “Our assessment supports the auditor’s report that the resource-efficient design by BPI Iloilo Solis will result in savings of 22 percent in energy, 23 percent in water and 76 percent in embodied energy from materials compared to a local baseline.”

Regarding BPI Loyola Katipunan, PGBI’s assessment confirmed the auditor’s report that its “resource efficient design results in a 25 percent reduction in energy consumption, 31 percent in water and 84 percent in embodied energy from materials compared to a local baseline scenario becomes”.

Since 2017, BPI has guided real estate project owners in complying with IFC EDGE resource efficiency standards. This is part of BPI’s long-standing commitment to embedding sustainability into its operations to create positive value for society and the environment.

In line with this, BPI continues to leverage the power of technology by taking a phygital approach – a combination of physical and digital channels – to offer banking customers a greater variety of services and experiences. With advanced digital capabilities, the bank enables its customers to consciously support sustainability through paperless banking, thereby reducing their carbon footprint.

Recognizing its cutting-edge sustainability innovations, BPI has received eight (8) sustainability-related awards as of October 2022, the most in any year among Philippine banks.
